Week of September 2, 2024
This week's photo features our 2024 school magnet. Our latest magnet is a dog bone with the school name, website, and phone number printed on it. The magnet also includes our school slogan and our comfort dog Tellulah. Also featured this year are our P596X folder, notebook, calendar magnet with a list of school events and our hand sanitizer.
We are very excited for the new school year and are looking forward to a successful 2024 - 2025 school year!
Week of September 9, 2024
This week's photos feature our September Back to School parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
On Friday, September 13, 2024 parents and guardians were invited into their child's classroom for a parent engagement activity. Parents had an opportunity to meet their child's classroom staff and complete an activity with their child.
The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this interactive activity. Parent engagement activities are held once a month to encourage parents to stay involved with our school community.
Week of September 16, 2024
This week's photos feature the District 75 Back to School Bash on Saturday, September 14, 2024. This year's back to school event took place at P188X @ Mott Haven and featured school Supplies, arts and crafts, games, face painting, a bounce house, 30+ agencies, food trucks, a DJ, field activities and raffle prizes including a TV, Nintendo Switch and gift cards.
Staff and families from P596X were present at the event and enjoyed this fun event to kick of the school year.

This week's photos feature our parent breakfast with the principal on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Parents and guardians were recently invited to breakfast with the principal in our 178X gym. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to meet the administration, curriculum support staff related services coordinator, parent coordinator and technology coach.
Parents learned about the school's instructional focus, 596X Comprehensive Educational Plan Goals, assessments we use and the curricula used at P596X.
We had a great turnout and everyone who attended enjoyed this yearly event.
Week of September 30, 2024

This week's photo features our 2024 - 2025 School Leadership Team. The School Leadership Team plays a significant role in creating a structure for school-based decision making and shaping the path to a collaborative school culture. The School Leadership Team functions as the management team of the school, representing the educational community. It oversees the planning and restructuring process to ensure our children are provided with quality education through increased teacher and parent participation. The Team is composed of an 18 member core team which is made up of the Principal, UFT Chapter Leader and the PTA President. The remaining members consist of equal numbers of parents and staff.
Our School Leadership Team meets monthly during the school day to discuss issues which are important to the school.
Week of October 7, 2024
This week's photos feature our Laser School Spirit Show on Wednesday, September 26, 2024. Parents,. students and staff recently attended our laser show/pep rally at Harry S. Truman High School.
The show included music, dancing and a laser show on the auditorium stage. The students received glow sticks and enjoyed dancing to the music.
Everyone enjoyed this fun and interactive event to start off the school year!
Week of October 14, 2024
This week's photos feature our school bus driver and matron training event on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Our school hosted this event in the 178 2nd floor gym.
The purpose of the training was to educate the bus staff on the behaviors associated with autism and how they can best support our students while they are riding the school bus. Training materials were distributed and refreshments were served. The training was hosted by the P596X administration and curriculum coaches. The bus staff enjoyed attending this informative event.

This week's photos feature our Dads, Donuts and Dunkin' event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024 P596X invited all dads to join in this Celebration Of Fatherhood. In conjunction with our Father’s Club, all dads were invited to bring their child to school and grab a donut and a cup of coffee for the road. Our amazing 596X dads also received a copy of the book "My Dad Is Amazing." We had an amazing turnout and enjoyed seeing so many dads participate in this event!

This week's photos feature our Curriculum Night at our 178 site.
On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, P596X invited all parents to learn about our school's curriculum.
Parents had the opportunity to learn more about our instructional programs that we use for math, reading, science, handwriting and social studies. Families that registered received a complete set of our book of the month (5 books total). We had a great turnout and the parents enjoyed taking part in this informative event.

This week's photo features our Parent Support Group/Care Corner at our 153 site. On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, P596X hosted our first parent support group at our 153 site. The purpose of the group is for
parents to receive the support and understanding of other parents who share their challenges. No Explanations. No Apologies. No Judgement!!! The support group/care corner meets monthly during the day and evening and is hosted by Dawn Harney, parent coordinator and Toni Rodriguez, Social Worker.

This week's photos feature our October parent engagement activity at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
For this month's parent engagement activity, the students read the book of the month "Our Class is a Family" by Shannon Olsen. The students then completed a bracelet making activity with their parent or guardian. The students learned that their classroom is a place where it’s safe to be themselves, it’s okay to make mistakes, and it’s important to be a friend to others. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun activity.
Week of November 18, 2024
This week's photos feature our October Saturday Academy. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, P596X hosted our first monthly Saturday Academy program for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
This year's theme is Triple A - Arts, Academics & Athletics. Families are asked to drop off their child at 9am. 596x staff works with our students in the areas of academics and arts until 11:15/11:30 am. Parents then re-join their child again for a pizza lunch. This gives parents a few hours of respite in the morning The students enjoyed taking part in these fun and educational activities.
Week of November 25, 2024
This week's photos feature part one of our Hispanic Heritage Celebration. On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, students, staff and parents joined us in the Truman High School Auditorium to listen to native music performed by the Francisco Navarrete Mariachi Band.
The celebration included dancing, singing and audience participation in several different musical numbers. The students, staff and parents enjoyed attending this fun event.
Week of December 2, 2024
This week's photos feature students from our 178, 153 and 498 sites on the Rolling Video Games bus. Each month, teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers and other staff select students of the month from all 3 sites. The students are rewarded with a student of the month certificate, a framed photo and an opportunity to spend time playing games on the game bus. The feedback from students, staff and parents has been very positive.
We are looking forward to continuing to reward students for their hard work and good attendance going forward on a monthly basis!

This week's photos feature our November parent engagement activity at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
For this month's parent engagement activity, parents were invited to come and engage with their child's class as they attend their cluster classes: music, adaptive physical education, STEAM, Art through Wellness, computer science and Storytelling through Legos. Parents were able to engage in a hands-on art project, scooter racing, coding on the iPads in computer science and more! The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun activity.

This week's photos feature our Halloween trick or treat and parade events at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
On Thursday, October 31st P596X hosted a Halloween celebration at each site. Students and staff dressed in their Halloween costumes and took part in a Halloween parade and trick-or-treat activity.
The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in these fun Halloween activities.

This week's photo features our December holiday ornament making event. On Tuesday, December 10, 2024 P596X held our annual ornament making event in the 178X gym. This event was hosted by former assistant principal and mentor Elena Talamo-Mirabal.
Parents had the opportunity to relax and network with each other while making their holiday ornament.
The parents enjoyed taking part in this fun activity!

This week's photos feature our December Saturday Academy. On Saturday, December 16, 2024 P596X held our holiday potluck Saturday Academy event in the 178X cafeteria. This event featured a holiday potluck and craft activity.
Parents had the opportunity to eat, relax and network with each other while completing their holiday craft.
The students were supervised by the staff as they completed their own holiday craft. The parents, students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun activity!
Week of January 6, 2025
This week's photos feature our 2024 Holiday Show. On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, P596X hosted our annual holiday show. The event was organized by 178 music teachers Melanie DeMarco and Danielle Silves, 153 music teacher Martine Riviere-Gros and 498 music teacher Laura Dunlap.
The students danced and performed several numbers and had a special visitor at the end of the show! The show was a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season and come together as a school community.
Week of January 13, 2025
This week's photos feature our winter soccer event at our 178 site. The winter soccer program took place on Saturdays in October, November and December 2024. The program was facilitated by Super Soccer Stars. The goal of the program was to keep students engaged, active, and healthy. The curriculum was specially designed to develop skills, teamwork, and build self-confidence in every child.
The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this program. We hope to offer more similar programs in the near future.

This week's photos feature our January parent engagement event at all three of our sites.
On Friday, January 10, 2025, students and parents were invited into their child's classroom to celebrate our January/February book of the month title, Big Feelings. Parents engaged with their child's class as they read the story and participated in an activity based around this title.
The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun and interactive activity.
Week of January 27, 2025
As part of an initiative to enhance STEM learning in our classrooms, the Computer Science department recently applied for and received a generous donation of Hess Toy Trucks. These trucks are part of a STEM education program developed in partnership with the Hess Corporation and Baylor College of Medicine.
The Hess Toy Trucks come with a comprehensive STEM curriculum guide designed to engage students in hands-on activities that explore topics such as force and motion, fire safety, geometry, and the important roles of firefighters in our community.
Thank you to our Computer Science department for their hard work in bringing this creative opportunity to our children.
Week of February 3, 2025
This week's photos feature class X24 from our 153 site at the Soap Box Derby! On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, class X24 went to 226M to participate in this exciting event. 596X was one of ten District 75 schools selected to be part of the “Soap Box Derby”.
Teacher, Yoshita Smith and X24 participated in a series of stations that engaged students in STEAM based activities. After creating their race car, all schools got to compete in a time trial to determine which school team was able to produce the fastest cars!

This week's photos feature our Black History Month Poetry Slam at Truman High School. On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, students and staff celebrated black history month with a poetry slam. Students, staff and parents all performed in various acts as part of the show.
The students also completed a share out to showcase the many projects they completed to celebrate this very special event. The students and staff enjoyed participating in this fun and educational event!

This week's photos feature our 2025 respect for all week event at all 3 of our sites. In honor of School Spirit/Respect For All Week, P596X “dressed the message” during the week of February 10th through February 14, 2025. The purpose of this week was to promote the theme of respect by engaging students in meaningful lessons and activities focused on preventing bias-based harassment, intimidation and/or bullying. All students and staff were encouraged to participate. The students and staff enjoyed participating in this yearly event.

This week's photos feature our February parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Friday, February 14, 2025, students and parents were invited into their child's classroom to celebrate Respect For All week and Valentines Day. Parents were invited to wear red or pink and engage with their child's class as they made a kindness wreath.

Week of March 10, 2025
This week's photos feature our 50 Shades of Melanin event at all three of our sites. On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, staff and students were asked to wear any shade of brown to show togetherness and diversity. This event was created by paraprofessional Sabely DeLosSantos in honor of Black History Month! The month long commemoration of African American history and achievement takes place each February in the United States. It was started in 1976.
The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this event!
Week of March 17, 2025
This week's photos feature our March cultural assembly at Truman High School. On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, parents, students and staff attended our assembly to celebrate the Hindu festival of Holi. This month's assembly featured the Ajna Dance Group. Every spring, people across India and around the world celebrate the Hindu festival Holi, throwing colored water and powders on one another in joyous celebration.
The students, parents and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun and interactive activity.

On Friday, March 14, 2025, students and parents were invited into their child's classroom to celebrate our March/April book of the month title, Carl- and the meaning of life. Parents engaged with their child's class as they read the book and participated in an activity based around this title.

Week of April 7, 2025
This week's photos feature our St. Patrick's Day celebration and parade. Our St. Patrick's Day celebration took place on Monday, March 17th, 2025.
The students and staff celebrated the day by wearing green apparel, taking pictures with their classmates, making a St. Patrick's Day craft and marching in the parade. Each of our three school units held a parade and took part in fun activities to celebrate this special day. The staff and students enjoyed taking part in this event!
Week of April 14, 2025
This week's photos feature the 2025 District 75 STEM Fair. On Thursday, March 20, 2025 students from P.S. 596X attended and presented their work at the American Museum of Natural History. Schools from all over the city participated in this yearly event. For their project this year, our students learned about the importance of composting and how nutrients from food scraps benefit plant growth. The compost was used to support plants in STEAM class during their unit on Plant Needs.
The staff and students enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging project and event! Descriptions of all of the 2025 STEM Fair projects can be found here.
Week of April 21, 2025
This week's photos feature our Muffins with Mom event at all three of our sites.
On Friday, March 21, 2025, all moms/mother figures were invited to bring their child to school and grab a muffin and cup of coffee. This event took place in celebration of Women's History Month and to honor all of our moms at P596X. Parents, students and staff were encouraged to wear PURPLE on this day. Our amazing 596X moms also received a copy of the book: "My Mom Is Magical."

This week's photos feature our April Saturday Academy. On Saturday, April 5, 2025, P596X held our monthly Saturday Academy event in the 178X cafeteria. Families dropped off students at 9am. 596X staff worked with students in the areas of academics and arts until 11:30am. Families then re-joined their child for a pizza lunch. The students also had the opportunity to complete a craft for Easter and Spring.

This week's photos feature our 596X Book Fair at the 178 site. Our 2025 Book Fair took place from Friday, April 4, 2025 through Friday, April 11, 2025. This event was an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school. A schedule was created for each unit so every class had an opportunity to attend. Parents also were able to shop at our school’s online Book Fair. A special thanks to our Parent Association and parent volunteers for bringing us this event!
Week of May 12, 2025
This week's photos feature our parent retreat at Camp Ramapo! On Friday, April 25, 2025, P596X families and staff boarded a bus and headed off to Camp Ramapo, in Rhinebeck, NY. The parent retreat was all about teambuilding, collaboration, and building relationships and trust. Upon arrival, parents and staff were immediately greeted with smiling faces and warm wishes for a wonderful day. Participants had a few minutes to grab a cup of coffee before they began their ice breaker game as a whole group. Immediately following, participants were divided into smaller groups with 596X staff members assigned to each group. During the morning portion of the day, parents and staff completed team-building activities, where they all had to work together to problem-solve and use strategic thinking and planning. Afterwards, a pizza lunch was served and participants were back outside for the afternoon. During this time, parents and staff completed both low and high-ropes, and roasted marshmallows around a campfire. The day ended the day with a lovely BBQ dinner and shared stories of the day spent together.

This week's photos feature our Autism Awareness & Neurodiversity celebration at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.
During the week of April 28th, the students and staff celebrated autism spirit week by dressing up and participating in various activities throughout the week. Monday was Sensory Friendly Monday, Tuesday was T-Shirt day, Wednesday was passion day, Thursday was light it up blue day and Friday was carnival day.
The students and staff enjoyed dressing the message each day and participating in all of the fun activities throughout the week!

This week's photos feature our 2025 Staff Appreciation Week at all three of our sites!
During the week of Monday, May 5, 2025 through Friday, May 9, 2025, we honored our hard working staff with "the greatest staff appreciation week on Earth." Monday featured nachos for Cinco de Mayo, Tuesday featured a popcorn bar, Wednesday was hot dog day, Thursday was game day and Friday was bagel and sweet treat day.
We appreciate the hard work and dedication that our staff shows us every day. Thank you for all that you do!

This week's photos feature the Spring Flower Power Event at our 178 site!
On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, our P596X moms participated in a mother's day and spring green event in the 2nd floor gym. Moms were able to make their own succulent garden to decorate their home for mother's day. Parents also had the opportunity to relax and network with each other during this activity. A special thank you to Elena Talamo-Mirabal for organizing this great spring event for our parents.

This week's photos feature the District 75 Lego League Expo at the New York Hall of Science!
P596X's LEGO Team, The Co-operators, took a deep dive into the "Submerged" theme for this year's D75 LEGO Expo, held at the NY Hall of Science on May 14, 2025. The team explored the sunlight, twilight and abyssal zones of the ocean and incorporated the story of Moana into their learning about sea exploration and submersible vehicles. They used the engineering design process to build their project, as well as to program their boat and submarine using the Spike App. Their project demonstrated how Moana traversed the zones of the ocean and how she could have used submersibles for deeper exploration.

This week's photos feature P596X Field Day 2025!
On Friday, May 23rd, students, parents and staff participated in Field Day 2025. The activities included ring toss, javelin throw, torch relay, pin the tail on the donkey, car racing, limbo, hurdle relay, long jump, home run derby, frisbee toss, soccer, volleyball, parachute games, bouncy ball racing, bubbles and more! The ceremony also included the 596X color guard! The students and staff enjoyed participating in this fun event and walked away with a medal for their participation!
Week of June 23, 2025
This week's photos feature the 2025 performance of Disney's Winnie the Pooh! Over 65 students across our three sites performed in “Winnie is the Pooh” on May 28th and June 5th 2025 to an excited audience! Disney's Winnie the Pooh KIDS is a delightful show based on the beloved characters of A.A. Milne and the 2011 Disney animated feature film. Welcome to the Hundred Acre Wood, where Winnie the Pooh is once again in search of honey. Along the way, he meets his pals, Tigger, Piglet, Rabbit and Owl, but soon discovers that Christopher Robin has been captured by the mysterious Backson! As they prepare for a rescue operation, the animals learn about teamwork, friendship and, of course... sharing snacks.
