Welcome to the 178 Unit!

At the 178 Elementary site, we have students ages 2.9 to 11 years old in a variety of classes including Pre-K, 6:1:1, 8:1:1, 12:1:1 and Inclusion.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-Handicapped Children (TEACCH), and Picture Communication Exchange System (PECS) are just a few of the methodologies, strategies and programs that we use to teach our children so that they can reach their full potential.

Extracurricular Activities

In addition to the academic part of the curriculum, our unit participates in many other activities to encourage our students’ many talents and bring out their unique personalities.

Cookshop uses hands-on exploration, cooking and physical activities to foster our children’s enjoyment and appreciation of good nutrition.

Get Ready to Learn is a yoga program that helps reduce stress, increases attention and focus, enhances performance and improves behavior in our classrooms.

The Arts & More!

Project arts is a NYC initiative that helps our students foster a love of dance, music, theater and visual arts and connects our students to organizations that offer programs to our students such as Daniel’s Music Foundation.

Speaking of the arts, we are lucky enough to collaborate with Disney to produce Aladdin on Broadway and The Lion King!

In addition, we also team up with our general education counterparts to work on building our social skills through our Best Buddies program. Best Buddies is a program that pairs our students with general education students and assists them in forming meaningful friendships and helps prevent bullying!
