Welcome to the 153 Unit!

At the 153 elementary site, we believe that a student-centered approach to instruction best serves the needs of our diverse learners. Housed within our nurturing and welcoming corridors are nineteen classes ranging from grades K-5.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-Handicapped Children (TEACCH), and Picture Communication Exchange System (PECS) are just a few of the methodologies, strategies and programs that we use to teach our children so that they can reach their full potential.

Extracurricular Activities

In addition to the academic part of the curriculum, our unit participates in many other activities to encourage our students’ many talents and bring out their unique personalities.

Cookshop uses hands-on exploration, cooking and physical activities to foster our children’s enjoyment and appreciation of good nutrition.

Get Ready to Learn is a yoga program that helps reduce stress, increases attention and focus, enhances performance and improves behavior in our classrooms.

STEM & More!

In keeping with the Department of Education’s on-going focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), several of our students have partnered with 153’s general education robotics club to learn how to build and manipulate electro-mechanical machines using ZOOB Movers kits, all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time!

Meanwhile, our dedicated speech team continues their close collaboration with classroom staff to teach fundamental vocabulary. They use interactive and engaging literacy activities through the “Core Vocabulary Through Literacy” program.
