School Magnet

Week of September 4, 2023

This week's photo features our 2023 school magnet. Our latest magnet is a black bookbag with the school name, website, and phone number printed on it. The magnet also includes our school slogan and our new comfort dog Tellulah.

 

We are very excited for the new school year and are looking forward to a successful 2023 - 2024 school year!    

Week of September 11, 2023

This week's photos feature our new Storytelling through Legos cluster class at our 178 site. This new class was designed with the purpose of providing opportunities, lessons and activities that are most current in the world of Lego education and literacy to our students.

 

Led by veteran teacher Mary Andrews, this hands on and technology infused class is already very popular among both students and staff. We hope to showcase more of their exciting projects throughout the school year!  

Week of September 18, 2023

 

This week's photos feature our parent breakfast with the principal on Friday, September 22, 2023. Parents and guardians were recently invited to breakfast with the principal in our 178X gym. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to meet the administration, curriculum support staff and Technology Coach Steven Sobol. 

 

Parents and guardians also had the opportunity to share a photo and explain why the image was important or special to them. We had a great turnout and everyone who attended enjoyed sharing their success stories and challenges with the other parents who attended. 

Week of September 25, 2023

 

This week's photos feature our Laser School Spirit Show on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Parents,. students and staff recently attended our laser show/pep rally at Harry S. Truman High School.

 

The show included music, dancing and a laser show on the auditorium stage. Everyone enjoyed this fun and interactive event to start off the school year!

 

Week of October 2, 2023

This week's photos feature our school bus driver and matron training event on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Our school hosted this event in the 178 2nd floor gym.

 

The purpose of the training was to educate the bus staff on the behaviors associated with autism and how they can best support our students while they are riding the school bus. Training materials were distributed and refreshments were served. The training was hosted by the P596X administration and curriculum coaches. The bus staff enjoyed attending this informative event.

Week of October 9, 2023

This week's photo features our Curriculum Night event on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Our school hosted an event for parents and guardians to learn about our school's curriculum, see and learn more about our instructional programs that we use for math, reading, science, handwriting and social studies. 

The event was held in-person at our 178 site and presented by our administration and curriculum coaches. Parents and guardians enjoyed attending this informative and educational event. 

Week of October 16, 2023

 
 

This week's photos feature our Hispanic Heritage month parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Friday, October 6, 2023, our school invited parents and guardians to visit their child's classroom.

 

Each year from September 15th through October 15th, Latino heritage is recognized. We invited parents to come and engage with their child's class as they read about these diverse cultures and participate in an activity based around them. Parents, students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun event.

This week's photos feature class Y61 at our 153 site. In honor of Fire Prevention Week, class Y61 took a trip to the local fire station.

The trip was enlightening and the students learned about all the gear the firefighters use. They enjoyed touring the fire truck and each student took a photo in the inside the truck. The students and staff enjoyed visiting the fire house on their first field trip of the school year!

This week's photos feature class X29 at our 498 site. Class X29 recently collaborated with their speech therapist Ms. Romy to explore pumpkins and its different parts.  The students identified both the outside and inside parts of a pumpkin including leaves, vine, stem, seeds, strands, skin, pulp as well as shape, size, and color. The students used AAC system "CoughDrop" as well as an interactive pumpkin chart made by the classroom teacher. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in these fun and educational activities.

This week's photos feature our Halloween trick or treat and parade events at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

 

On Tuesday, October 31st P596X hosted a Halloween celebration at each site. Students and staff dressed in their Halloween costumes and took part in a Halloween parade and trick-or-treat activity. Students and staff also took part in a pumpkin decorating contest. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in these fun Halloween activities.

Week of November 13, 2023

 
 

This week's photo features class V04 at our 178, site. Recently, the students and staff took part in a pumpkin decorating contest. Each class decorated a pumpkin and put it on display for all classes to see. The students took part in the entire design process including planning, painting and decorating. Staff and parents then had the opportunity to vote for their favorite pumpkin from each of our three sites. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun fall activity. 

Week of November 20, 2023

 
 

This week's photos feature students from our 178 site. Recently, P596x was given a unique opportunity for our students and accompanying staff to engage in swimming lessons at the Bronx YMCA. 


The classes include one YMCA instructor guiding the swim class and a lifeguard on duty at all times for safety purposes. The students and staff are enjoying their time at the pool. Additional students at our other sites will have the opportunity to participate in the swimming program (with parent permission) in the near future.

This week's photos feature our November parent engagement activity at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

 

For this month's parent engagement activity, the students read the book of the month "Apple Cake a Gratitude" by Dawn Casey and Genevieve Godbout, placed thankful apples on their gratitude tree, and made no-bake apple pie in a cup. The book focuses on social contributions and saying thank you for the gifts nature provides. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun activity.

This week's photos feature class Y03 at our 178 site. Aligned to Chancellor Banks' Four Pillars for Building Trust in NYC Public Schools (prioritizing wellness and its link to student success), class Y03 collaborated with our STEM department and our community-based partners at the Botanical Gardens. This partnership allowed the students to experience the various plant life found within the Botanical Gardens. Students were encouraged to use their 5 senses to help document their findings about different plants. The students and staff had such an amazing time. We are looking forward to going back again!

Week of December 11, 2023

 
 

This week's photos feature class X14 at our 178 site. As part of the Chancellor's Pillars for building trust in NYC Public Schools (Prioritizing wellness and its link to student success), class X14 experienced the great outdoors by attending a field trip to the Queens Farm. 

 

The students learned about the different animals on the farm, the crops they are currently growing and harvesting, and how to recycle food scraps into compost. The students and staff had a great time and are looking forward to going back again in the future!

This week's photos feature our December Saturday Academy. On Saturday, December 16, 2023 P596X held our holiday Saturday Academy event in the 178X cafeteria. This event featured a holiday potluck and craft activity. 

 

Parents had the opportunity to eat, relax and network with each other while completing their holiday craft. The students were supervised by the staff as they completed their own holiday craft. The parents, students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun activity!

This week's photos feature our 2023 Holiday Show. On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, P596X hosted our annual holiday show. The event was organized by 178 music teachers Melanie DeMarco and Danielle Silves, 153 music teacher Laura Kirton and 498 music teacher Laura Dunlap.

The students danced and performed several numbers and had some special visitors at the end of the show featuring the assistant principals! The show was a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season and come together as a school community.     

Week of January 1, 2024

 
 

This week's photos feature Pre-K class C03 at our 178 site. The students are engaging in taking turns with their peers. The class is using a sensory bin to look for the color Orange. Sensory lessons allow the students to distinguish between  colors while practicing taking turns with their peers. 

 

These lessons are very important in early childhood. To make sense of the world around them, children gather and process information by using their different senses (smell, hearing, sight, taste, touch, and movement). The students are enjoying these interactive lessons!

This week's photo features class X17 at our 178 site. As a part of the Envisions math curriculum, the students have been using the Promethean board in their classroom to solve problems on the topic of comparing numbers. The students are exploring ways to compare numbers up to 120. This activity is aligned to the chancellor's priority that all students will have a high-quality academic experience.

Envisions is a problem-based and visual learning math program that enables students to gain a deeper understanding of math concepts and encourages student-led learning. The students are enjoying learning using this program and the technology in their classroom.

This week's photos feature our January parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Friday, January 12, 2024 parents and guardians were invited into their child's classroom for a parent engagement activity: Mixed a Colorful Story Painting Activity. Each class read the book of the month and then completed a painting activity with their visitors. The book focuses on cultural competence and the domain area of social awareness.

The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this interactive activity.

This week's photos feature our January Saturday Academy. On Saturday, January 20, 2023, students and parents were invited to our January Saturday Academy in the 178X cafeteria.

The theme for this month was healthy eating and healthy cooking.

 

Parents had the opportunity to relax and network with each other. The students were supervised by the staff as they completed the healthy eating activity.

Participants were able to prepare and enjoy a turkey chili dish. The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun and interactive activity.

This week's photos feature our January Cultural Assembly which featured Ling Tang- Traditional Chinese Dancers. On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, students staff and parents were invited to our January Cultural Assembly at Truman High School. This assembly presented by Ling Tang featured both Chinese classical and ethnic dance. It featured a live performance with traditional costumes and props. Students learned about the history and cultural development of several Chinese dance styles. Participants also interacted with the artist by playing instruments.  

Week of February 5, 2024

 
 

This week's photos feature the STEM program at our 178 site. This year STEM has partnerships with New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) and NYC Urban Park Rangers.

At NYBG, students in classes Y03 and X15 have been exploring nature through the seasons. Students chose a tree to observe throughout the school year. Students had a guided tour of the Native Plant Garden and the Evergreen Forest. Students used their science skills to investigate nature.

 

Students in classes Y01 and Y07 had a visit from the Park Rangers. Students were shown models of how plants grow, engaged in a plant puzzle, and learned plant parts through body movement. In the spring, students will have a field trip with the rangers in Pelham Bay Park to see nature up close.

This week's photos feature our Winter Soccer event at our 178 site. On Saturday, January 27, 2024 and February 17, 2024, students and parents were invited to our winter soccer program in the P.S. 178 cafeteria. The event is being run by Super Soccer Stars. The program is designed to keep the students engaged, active, and healthy in any environment. The specially designed, age specific curriculum helps develop skills, teamwork, and builds self-confidence in every child. The parents and students enjoyed participating in this program. There will be two more sessions on March 9th and March 16th.

This week's photos feature our 100th Day of School celebration at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Thursday, February 15, 2024, students and staff celebrated the 100th day of school. Each class received a variety of activities to complete for “Respect for All” week/100th Day of School.

 

The activities included decorating a 100th day of school t-shirt or hat. The students also completed math or reading activities at stations in their classroom. The students and staff enjoyed participating in this fun and educational event!

This week's photos feature our February Black History Assembly. On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, students staff and parents were invited to our assembly to celebrate black history month at Truman High School. The event featured an African Drum & Dance group.  The assembly featured a live performance with storytelling, singing, dancing and audience participation. Students learned about musical contributions from black musicians throughout the performance. Parents, staff and students enjoyed participating in this month's event!

This week's photos feature our Respect for All Week 2024. In honor of Respect For All Week, P596X and P.S. 178X/153X & 498X “Dressed the Message” together. The goal of the week was to promote the theme of respect by engaging students in meaningful lessons and activities focused on preventing bias-based harassment, intimidation and/or bullying.

 

All students and staff were encouraged to participate by dressing in themed attire each day. The themed days included spirit day, kindness day, superhero day, neon glow day and pajama day. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this yearly event!

This week's photos feature our March Parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Friday, March 15, 2024 parents and guardians were invited into their child's classroom for a parent engagement activity: Every Little Letter Activity. Each class read the book of the month and then completed a letter collage making activity with their visitors. The book focuses on problem solving and the domain area of self-management.

The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this interactive activity.

This week's photos feature our 596X Book Fair at the 153 site. Our 2024 Book Fair took place from Monday, March 18, 2024 through Friday, March 22,2024. This event was an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school. A schedule was created for each unit so every class had an opportunity to attend. Parents also were able to shop at our school’s online Book Fair. A special thanks to our Parent Association and parent volunteers for bringing us this event!

This week's photos feature our March Magic Show at Harry S. Truman High School. On Thursday, March 21, 2024, our school celebrated the magical progress our students have made by hosting a magic show for the students, parents and staff. The show featured the magician, The Great Ragidy Supreme. Born and raised in New York City, The Great Ragidy Supreme performs at hundreds of special events throughout the year, pushing his act to develop the art of magic into something both unique and modern. The students, parents, and staff enjoyed this entertaining show and look forward to another magic show in the future!

This week's photos feature our March Saturday Academy. On Saturday, March 23, 2024 parents, students and staff participated in a Sweet Stir-Fry event. This event was an interactive cooking experience together with the support of staff and hosted by Common Threads: Cooking for Life.

 

The goal of this Saturday Academy was to embrace healthy eating and healthy cooking. The students, parents, and staff enjoyed taking part in this interactive experience.   

Week of April 15, 2024

 
 

This week's photos feature the 2024 District 75 STEM Fair. On Wednesday, March 20, 2024 students from P.S. 596X attended and presented their work at the American Museum of Natural History. Schools from all over the city participated in this yearly event. Our students researched exhibits at the Bronx Zoo and chose places they would like to see while visiting the zoo. Students then chose their favorite animals from that exhibit. Finally, students created a coding board using pictures of their favorite zoo animals and coded a robot mouse to visit each zoo animal.     

The staff and students enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging project and event! Descriptions of all of the 2024 STEM Fair projects can be found here.

This week's photos feature class Y14 at our 178 site.

As a part of the March parent engagement activity around the book of the month, the students completed a bead making/friendship bracelet activity with their visitors. The bracelets were used to show cooperation and teamwork between all of the students in the class as demonstrated in the book Every Little Letter.

 The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this fun activity!

This week's photos feature our April Saturday Academy at our 178 site. On Saturday, April 13, 2024 parents, students and staff participated in a Summer Delight cooking event by creating their own summer salad. This event was our second interactive cooking experience together with the support of staff and hosted by Common Threads: Cooking for Life. 

 This cooking event included a mystery treat for dessert! students and staff enjoyed participating in this fun and interactive cooking expereince!

This week's photos feature our Autism Awareness & Neurodiversity celebration at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

During the week of April 15th, the students and staff celebrated autism spirit week by dressing up and participating in various activities throughout the week. Monday was Magnificent Mind day, Tuesday was T-Shirt day, Wednesday was passion day, Thursday was light it up blue day and Friday was carnival day.

 The students and staff enjoyed dressing the message each day and participating in all of the fun activities throughout the week!

This week's photos feature our parent retreat at Camp Ramapo! On Thursday, May 2, 2024, P596X families and staff boarded a bus and headed off to Camp Ramapo, in Rhinebeck, NY. The parent retreat was all about teambuilding, collaboration, and building relationships and trust. Upon arrival, parents and staff were immediately greeted with smiling faces and warm wishes for a wonderful day. Participants had a few minutes to grab a cup of coffee before they began their ice breaker game as a whole group. Immediately following, participants were divided into smaller groups with 596X staff members assigned to each group. During the morning portion of the day, parents and staff completed team-building activities, where they all had to work together to problem-solve and use strategic thinking and planning. Afterwards, a pizza lunch was served and participants were back outside for the afternoon. During this time, parents and staff completed both low and high-ropes, and roasted marshmallows around a campfire. The day ended the day with a lovely BBQ dinner and shared stories of the day spent together.
