Week of September 5, 2022

This week's photo features the new P.S. 596X administrative team who returned to school the week of August 29th.

This year our administrative team picture includes newly appointed assistant principal Rebecca Miles from our 178 site and interim acting assistant principal Gina Walpole from our 153 site. 

We are excited to welcome our students and staff back to school on September 8th for a fun and engaging new school year.

Week of September 12, 2022

This week's photos feature our staff orientation on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. For the first time in 2 years, our staff orientation took place in-person in the 178 cafeteria. 

Each staff member received a P596X t-shirt, calendar magnet of important dates and 2022 - 2023 P596X magnet.

During the orientation, the staff had the opportunity to review our safety procedures, our instructional focus for the 2022 - 2023 school year and other important information. 

Week of September 19, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our parent meet and greet on Friday, September 16, 2022. Parents and guardians were recently invited into their child's classroom to meet their child's teacher and classroom staff. 

Parents also had the opportunity to participate in various classroom activities with their child and experience "A Day in the Life at P596X!" Parents who could not attend in-person also attended virtually on Google Classroom. 

Parents, students and staff all enjoyed taking part in this beginning of the year event. We look forward to hosting similar monthly events in the near future!

This week's photos feature our parent breakfast with the principal on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Parents and guardians were recently invited to breakfast with the principal in our 178X cafeteria. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to meet the administration and curriculum support staff as well as Parent Coordinator Dawn Harney, Parent Association President Stefannie Bonilla, Fathers Club coordinator and teacher Kevin Feeney and Technology Coach Steven Sobol. 

 

Parents and guardians also had the opportunity to learn about our instructional focus, DOE priorities, CEP goals, Assessments and curriculum used at our school.

Student Omari P at Carnegie Hall

This week's photo features student Omari P. from our 178 site at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Our school recently had four tickets generously gifted by a P596X parent to "The President's Own" United States Marine Band at Carnegie Hall. The tickets were chosen by a lottery and each family received 2 tickets.

 

Omari and his family were one of the lucky families that were able to attend this event and had a wonderful time. We hope to be able to offer more opportunities similar to this to our students and families in the near future.

This week's photo features our Unity Day event on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Our school wore orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. This event was created by the National Bullying Prevention Center.

Our administration, staff and students enjoyed taking part in this event!

This week's photos feature our school bus driver and matron training event on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Our school hosted this event in the 178 library.

 

The purpose of the training was to educate the bus staff on the behaviors associated with autism and how they can best support our students while they are riding the school bus. Training materials were distributed and refreshments were served. The training was hosted by the P596X administration and curriculum coaches. The bus staff enjoyed attending this informative event.

This week's photos feature part one of our Hispanic Heritage Celebration Celebration. On Friday, October 21, 2022, students, staff and parents joined us in the Harry S. Truman High School - Maye A. Shaw Auditorium to listen to native music performed by the group DNA.

 

The celebration included dancing, singing and audience participation in several different musical numbers. 

The students, staff and parents enjoyed attending this fun event. Part 2 of this event will take place on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 10am and will feature song & Dance from Spain & Latin America.

This week's photos feature our Halloween parent engagement and parade events at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Friday, October 28th P596X hosted a Halloween parent engagement event. Parents were invited into their child's classroom to take part in a fun Halloween activity. On Monday, October 31, 2022, the students dressed in their Halloween costumes and took part in a Halloween parade and trick-or-treat activity. Students and staff also took part in a pumpkin decorating contest. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in these fun Halloween activities.

This week's photos feature our October Saturday Academy. On Saturday, October 29th P596X hosted our first monthly Saturday Academy program for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

 

Parents participated in a workshop entitled “Understanding Related Services” hosted by our P596X Speech, Occupational and Physical therapists.

Students took part in a Fall Fest activity which featured fun, interactive fall activities for the students. The students, staff and parents enjoyed taking part in these fun and educational activities.

This week's photos feature class V05 at our 178 site. Recently, the students of class V05 were able to visit Queens Farm. During their visit, the students picked pumpkins in the pumpkin patch, went on a scavenger hunt and took a hayride. The students went through a corn maze and were able to meet some of the farm animals. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in these fun and educational activities.

 

Queens Farm is a historic farm located on 47 acres of the neighborhoods of Floral Park and Glen Oaks in Queens. The farm occupies the city's largest remaining tract of undisturbed farmland. The site features restored farm buildings from three different centuries, a greenhouse, planting fields, livestock, and various examples of vintage farm equipment.

This week's photos feature students from the Celebra-tees club at our 178 site. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. Students in the Celebra-tees club at the 178 site worked with speech teachers Regina Laurato and Frances Chamorro to make t-shirts for our 596X staff fundraiser to support breast cancer research and treatment.  

Every October, people all over the world show their support for everyone affected by breast cancer. The students and staff enjoyed being a part of this great cause and wore pink on Wednesday, October 26th to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness.

This week's photos feature students from class X15 at our 178 site. On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, the students in class X15 took a field trip to the New York Hall of Science! X15 scientists explored maker-spaces with Lego and building materials, tested reflection using lamps, experimented with power grids and electricity and played in the happiness experiment hall.

The New York Hall of Science, also known as NYSCI, is a science museum located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, NY. The students and staff enjoyed this engaging and educational experience!

This week's photos feature our November Saturday Academy. On Saturday, November 19, 2022, P596X hosted our second monthly Saturday Academy program. This month's activities featured our Multi-cultural international "Be Thankful" Potluck luncheon.

 

Parents and students had the opportunity to eat, mingle and give thanks by bringing a delicious dish from their culture for others to try. Parents were also asked to share their recipe to add to the P596x cookbook which will be sent home later this year. Students, parents and staff all enjoyed taking part in this delicious and fun event!

This week's photos feature our meteorologist meet and greet at our 178 site. On Wednesday, November 16, 2022 the students in our 178 STEM classes had a wonderful meet and greet from NBC4's Kathryn Prociv. She made and gave a demonstration of a chart with different types of clouds and a weather map of the USA. She spoke about how she became a meteorologist and the tools she uses to predict the weather. The students were able to complete a question and answer session with her as well. It was amazing to see how excited the students were to ask Katherine questions related to the weather.

This week's photos feature our November Cookshop/Parent Engagement event. On Friday, November 19, 2022, P596X hosted a salsa making parent engagement activity. Parents joined us in their child's classroom to take part in the step by step process of making salsa.

 

Parents also had the opportunity to meet with their child's teacher and view the work their child has been working on recently. The parents, students and staff enjoyed taking part in this interactive and fun activity!

This week's photos feature our December parent engagement and ornament decorating event. On Monday, December 5, 2022, P596X hosted an ornament making parent engagement event. The event was organized by former Assistant Principal/Mentor: Elena Talamo-Mirabal.

 

Parents had the opportunity to network with each other, relax and make some holiday ornaments as well as other crafts.

The parents enjoyed taking part in this relaxing and fun activity!

This week's photos feature our 2022 Holiday Show. On Friday, December 16, 2022, P596X hosted our annual holiday show. The event was organized by 178 music teachers Melanie DeMarco and Danielle Silves, 153 music teacher Laura Kirton and 498 music teacher Laura Dunlap.

The students danced and performed several numbers including jingle bell rock and had a special visitor! The show was a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season and come together as a school community.

This week's photos feature our December Saturday Academy. On Saturday, December 17, 2022, P596X hosted our third Saturday Academy event of the school year. The event was organized by Parent coordinator Dawn Harney along with several P596X teachers and paraprofessionals.

Parents and students had a pizza lunch and decorated ornaments and snow flakes. Students also participated in music and other interactive holiday activities.

This week's photo features our recent partnership with Magnify Autism. It is with great pleasure that we announce that our school has received a very generous donation of sensory items from Magnify Autism and the NY Yankees. This generous donation will allow for a variety of sensory items to be given to all classrooms at 596X.

A big thank you to Magnify Autism and the New York Yankees. It was a pleasure working with both organizations.

This week's photo features our January Cultural Assembly which featured Ling Tang- Traditional Chinese Dancers. On Friday, January 13, 2023, students staff and parents were invited to our January Cultural Assembly at Truman High School. This assembly presented by Ling Tang featured both Chinese classical and ethnic dance. It featured a live performance with traditional costumes and props. Students learned about the history and cultural development of several Chinese dance styles such as traditional operas, Tai-Chi, Inner-Mongolian, Uyghur, and Han. Participants also interacted with the artist by dancing with silk ribbons and fans.

This week's photo features our January parent engagement event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. Our parent engagement activity took place on Friday, January 20, 2023. The students and parents  participated in a read aloud of the January/February Book of the Month; "My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood" by Tameka Fryer Brown. In response to the book, the students used picture symbols or words to express how each color of the rainbow makes them feel. They completed a rainbow craft by matching each color of the rainbow to a feeling. The students and parents enjoyed taking part in this activity.

This week's photos feature our January Saturday Academy. On Saturday, January 21, 2023, P596X hosted our fourth Saturday Academy event of the school year. The event was organized by Parent coordinator Dawn Harney along with several P596X teachers and paraprofessionals.

The agency "Children’s Aid" presented to parents the “Family and Community Support and Resources” they provide. Students also participated in craft activities, music and other interactive activities. The parents and students had a pizza lunch and enjoyed participating in this month's event.

This week's photos feature our February Black History Assembly. On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, students staff and parents were invited to our assembly to celebrate black history month at Truman High School. The event featured the African Drum & Dance group DNA - back by popular demand! The assembly started with student presentations about black history month. A live performance with singing, dancing and audience participation followed. Students learned about musical contributions from black musicians throughout the performance. Parents, staff and students enjoyed participating in this month's event!

This week's photos feature our February Saturday Academy. On Saturday, February 11, 2023, students and parents were invited to attend our February Saturday Academy. The event featured an opportunity to attend the INCLUDE NYC virtual fair and to browse virtual resources and information on summer camps, after school, recreation, athletics, art, dance, music, transition services and college and supports and services. Students participated in fun, interactive art and music activities and a pizza lunch was provided. The students and parents enjoyed participating in this fun and educational event!

This week's photos feature our Respect for All Week 2023. In honor of Respect For All Week, P596X and P.S. 178X/153X & 498X “Dressed the Message” together. The goal of the week was to promote the theme of respect by engaging students in meaningful lessons and activities focused on preventing bias-based harassment, intimidation and/or bullying. All students and staff were encouraged to participate by dressing in themed attire each day. The themed days included spirit day, love day, superhero day, feelings day and parent Engagement Day & “No One Eats Alone Day. The week concluded with a virtual student share out assembly where videos and photos of the events that took place throughout the week were shared. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this yearly event!

This week's photos feature our Paint and Sip Party at our 178 site. On Monday, February 27, 2023, from 4pm to 5pm, P596X Hosted a Paint and Sip Party in our 178 gym. Parents and staff were invited to take part in an arts and crafts activity during which they painted on mason jars and enjoyed refreshments.

 

The purpose of this event was simply to relax, network with other parents and staff,  and take part in a fun event.  The parents and staff enjoyed taking part in this event!

This week's photos feature our March Saturday Academy at our 178 site. Our March Saturday Academy took place on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, from 10am to 12pm. 

 

Parents celebrated spring by mingling with other parents, sharing concerns and relaxing while participating in interactive fun group activities. The staff supervised the students as they completed arts and crafts projects and musical activities. The parents and students enjoyed taking part in this event!

This week's photos feature our St. Patrick's Day celebration and parade. Our St. Patrick's Day celebration took place on Friday, March 17th, 2023.

 

The students and staff celebrated the day by wearing green apparel, taking pictures with their classmates, making a St. Patrick's Day craft and marching in the parade . Each of our three school units held a parade and took part in fun activities to celebrate this special day. The staff and students enjoyed taking part in this event!

This week's photos feature our Box Out Bullying Assembly at Truman High School. Our Box Out Bullying Assembly took place on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

 

The Box Out Bullying event was an interactive and dynamic anti-bullying assembly with a focus on bystander empowerment. The show turns students into positive actors, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to identify bullying when they see it and step in to stop it.. The staff, parents and students enjoyed taking part in this event!

This week's photos feature our Multi-Cultural Fair and Parent Engagement Activity on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Each class chose a country to present on and prepared hands-on activities for parents, students and staff to participate in. Visitors had the opportunity to shake maracas in Chile, make egg carton turtles in Trinidad & Tobago, fly in hot air balloons in Turkey, make masks in DR, study landmarks in France, learn how to write their names in Hieroglyphics while in Egypt, ride in origami boats while in Japan, plant shamrocks in Ireland, braid Challah in Israel, play soccer in Argentina, jump over animals in Madagascar, eat tacos in Mexico, speak Italian in Italy while making cannolis, and get their sweet tooth cravings filled by sweet chum chum in Bangladesh!

This week's photos feature the NYPD Jazz Band performance at Truman High School on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. The NYPD Jazz band is a 100-member police marching band that was formed in 2005. The band started playing jazz music and has since expanded to include rock, soul and other music genres. The band features members of every race, religion, color and creed. They perform about 150 times a year, at NYPD ceremonies, retirement parties and community events. The 30 person band put on an incredible interactive performance for the school community. The staff, students and parents enjoyed this fun and engaging performance!

This week's photos feature the District 75 Music Academy at our 178 site.

 

The District 75 Saturday Music Academy is a 6-week VIRTUAL Saturday course for students and families to engage in music! Families are learning with teaching artists from our partner organization, Daniel’s Music Foundation. Together, families and students, are engaging in music- based activities like percussion, movement with music and choral experiences. The staff, students and parents are enjoying taking part in this fun and engaging experience!

This week's photos feature the Meg Languages program, at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

The Meg languages program is taking place at all three of our sites. Students are learning Spanish and Mandarin. The class is connected to either a China or Latin American based teaching team who provides interactive live lessons for children. The classroom teachers complete additional activities with the students to supplement the program.

 The students are enjoying taking part in this fun program!

This week's photos feature the autism spirit week & Neurodiversity celebration at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

During the week of April 24th, the students and staff celebrated autism spirit week by dressing up and participating in various activities throughout the week. Monday was light it up blue day, Tuesday was puzzle day, Wednesday was hat day, Thursday was sensory friendly day and Friday was carnival day.

 The students and staff enjoyed dressing the message each day and participating in all of the fun activities throughout the week!

This week's photos feature the spring 2023 carnival at our 178 site.

 

On Friday, April 28th, the students and staff wrapped up autism spirit week by attending the spring 2023 carnival, which featured bouncy houses, slides, a baseball batting game, a crawl through obstacle course, Elliot the clown performing his magic tricks, music and cotton candy.

 The students and staff enjoyed  participating in this fun event!

This week's photos feature students from P596X @ 153 at the District 75 STEM Fair on the Intrepid!

 

On Tuesday, May 16th, the students and staff participated in the District 75 STEM Fair. The students created a wind turbine, which is a renewable energy source. From the electrical energy made by the wind turbine, the students were able to run an electric car and carousel. The students coded their cars to go from the houses to the charging station and coded the carousel to turn in multiple directions and change the colors of the lights. The students also made buildings with solar panels. The students and staff enjoyed  participating in this fun event and were able to visit other exhibits while they were at the museum!

This week's photos feature P596X Field Day 2023!

 

On Friday, May 19th,  students, parents and staff participated in Field Day 2023. The activities included ring toss, javelin throw, torch relay, pin the tail on the donkey, car racing, limbo, hurdle relay, long jump, home run derby, frisbee toss, soccer, volleyball,  parachute games, bouncy ball racing, bubbles and more! The ceremony also included the 596X color guard and a performance by the P596X Cheerleaders! The students and staff enjoyed  participating in this fun event and walked away with a medal for their participation!

This week's photos feature the May Saturday Academy Bowling event at Gun Post Lanes!

 

On Saturday, May 20th,  students, parents and staff participated in the May Saturday Academy. This event also served as the Saturday Academy end of year celebration for the 2022 - 2023 school year. The students and parents were able to bowl using several lanes and have a pizza lunch. The students and parents enjoyed  participating in this fun event!

This week's photos feature class Y12 and Y14 from our 178 site at Orchard Beach!

 

Class Y12 and Y14 went to Orchard Beach as part of their culminating activity with Bronx Children's Museum on Wednesday, May 17th. Students explored and observed nature in the Bronx during a nature walk. They also tested the water's salinity and clarity. They had the opportunity to see a silverfish and a horseshoe crab. It was a fun day of hands-on learning.
 The students and staff enjoyed participating in this fun event!

This week's photos feature World SEL Day at our 178, 153 and 498 sites!

World SEL Day took place on Friday, March 10, 2023. Social Emotional Learning Day was started ion 2020 and is a global, grassroots campaign for social-emotional learning to support children’s academic recovery, mental health, and well-being. In 2023, over 4,000 SEL champions representing all 50 U.S. states and 87 countries made 11,000 commitments to showcase promote, advocate, and support SEL. At P596X, students in all sites created links of kindness which stretched across the entire school.

This week's photos feature the New York Park Rangers at our 178, 153 and 498 sites!

 

In conjunction with the NY Parks departments, students at 596x get weekly visits from actual park rangers where they learn about the different parks in the Bronx before they take a guided trip to that park with their ranger. 

 
 The students and staff have enjoyed participating in this interactive program!

This week's photos feature our Spring Fling graduate celebration at our 178 site!

 

The Spring Fling event took place on Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 1pm to 5pm in the PS178 Cafeteria. The event was held to celebrate our 2023 graduates and included a DJ, music, dancing, snacks, games, refreshments, and giveaways.

Students dressed up as superheroes and brought their families to be a part of the celebration. The students, their families,  and staff enjoyed participating in this fun event!

This week's photos feature the 2023 No Place for Hate Ceremony at NYU Skirball!

 

P596X was once again named a Gold Star “No Place for Hate” school for the 2022 - 2023 school year. The award is only given to schools who are committed to work that embodies empathy, inclusivity, tolerance and respect. We would like to thank P596x counselors, Ms. Erica Wilson and Ms. Kanetha Brown Sampson, as well as our “Respect for All” team for their hard work. The 596x “Respect for All” team meets monthly to review our social and emotional curriculum (Rethink) and plan schoolwide activities that support each month’s theme.

This week's photos feature the 2023 5th grade graduation at Harry S. Truman High School!

 

The graduation took place on Thursday, June 15, 2023 in the Maye A. Shaw Auditorium. Parents, fellow students and staff were all invited to attend. The ceremony included an awards ceremony, musical numbers performed by the students and a slideshow featuring the graduating students. The graduation ceremony was dedicated to student Miguel Ramos.

This week's photos feature the 2023 Pre-K grade graduation in the 178X Cafeteria!

 

The graduation took place on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. Parents, fellow students and staff were all invited to attend. The ceremony included an awards ceremony, musical numbers performed by the students and a slideshow featuring the graduating students. Congratulations to all of our 2023 Pre-K graduates!

This week's photos feature classes X14 and X15 at our 178 site.

 

Over the course of the six week summer program, our classes in all three sites took several fun and educational trips out in the community. Classes X14 and X15 took trips to Turtle Cove to play min-golf, Daniels Music, Jib Bowling Lanes and the Firehouse. The students and staff enjoyed being able to spend time outdoors and enjoy the nice summer weather.

This week's photos feature our summer carnival at our 178 site.

 

On Thursday, July 27, 2023, P596X held our summer carnival in the P178X school yard. Parents, students and staff were all invited to this fun event which included games, fun slides, cotton candy, music, Elliot the clown and a dunk tank. Our carnival is always a very popular event and a great way to have a lot of summer fun!

This week's photos feature our water mania event at our 178 site.

 

On Thursday, August 3, 2023, P596X held our water mania in the P178X school yard. This fun event included games, water slides, cotton candy and an obstacle course. Parents were invited to this event and enjoyed being a part of this fun and exciting summer event.

This week's photos feature our ice cream social event at our 178, 153 and 498 sites.

 

On Friday, August 4, 2023, P596X held our ice cream social at all three of our sites. Multiple ice cream flavors (chocolate, vanilla & strawberry) were served as well as a variety of toppings. Visual supports were available to assist the students with making their sundae/communicating with the staff. The students and staff enjoyed participating in this delicious and fun event!

This week's photos feature our wild summer talent show in the Harry S. Truman High School auditorium.

 

On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, P596X held our annual summer talent show. The talent show acts included an appearance and dance number by Barbie and Ken, a group performance from the students in each unit, and lots of sining and dancing. The students and staff enjoyed showing off their amazing talent at this fun summer event!

On Friday, August 11, 2023, P596X held our summer culminating activity at all three of our sites. Each class presented a sensory activity for their fellow students and the staff to participate in. The staff accompanied the students as they completed each activity. The students and staff enjoyed participating in this therapeutic and fun event!
