Week of August 30, 2021

This week's photo features the P.S. 596X administrative team who returned to school this week. We are excited to welcome our students and staff back to school in-person on September 13th for a fun and engaging new school year!

This week's photos feature our back to school decorations at our 178 site! We were very excited to welcome back our students and staff to in-person learning on Monday, September 13th. We are looking forward to a great year together in the classroom!

This week's photo features our breakfast with the principal at our 178 site! On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, parents had the opportunity to meet the admin team and to learn about the school's instructional focus, DOE Priorities and 596X Comprehensive Educational Plan Goals. The parents also learned about the assessments we use and the curricula used at P596X.

This week's photo features Izzy our school comfort dog returning to school after being remote since the beginning of the pandemic. Izzy is a four year old female beagle. She is our school comfort dog and comes to visit our students throughout the school year to engage in lessons in the classroom using the Mutt-I-Grees Curriculum.

Week of October 18, 2021

This week's photos feature class X12 at our 178 site! To celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, one of the families of class X12 sent in items used in their countries for the students to explore, including a pilon and a tostonera.  Student Evan helped his mother make templeque (a coconut pudding) for the students to enjoy and mom celebrated with the class virtually!

This week's photos feature class X15 at our 178 site! To celebrate Halloween, the students in the class decorated their own pumpkin and added Jack-o-lantern faces.

 

On Thursday, October 28th the students will participate in the Halloween parade and will celebrate with their teacher, paraprofessionals and classmates!

Week of November 1, 2021

This week's photo features class X17 at our 178 site! To celebrate Halloween, the students in the class dressed up in their best Halloween costume. On Thursday, October 28th the students participated in the Halloween parade and celebrated with their teacher, paraprofessionals and classmates!

Week of November 8, 2021

This week's photos feature class X17 at our 178 site! On Friday, October 22nd the students participated in the Hispanic Heritage Celebration/Assembly. Students & staff listened to native music, learned about Hispanic history & created an art project. The students had a great time participating in this school-wide event!

Week of November 15, 2021

This week's photos feature class V23 at our 153 site! The students recently participated in a virtual program through our partnership with the New York Botanical Garden. NYBG sent plants for V23 to dissect as they learned about plant parts. They also sent materials for the students to plant a bean plant. The students enjoyed participating in this hands-on activity!

This week's photos feature the P176X/P596X Father's Club! In partnership with P176X, our father's club meets every third Wednesday of the month at our 178 site. The purpose of the father's club is to network and learn from one another. The father's club is lead by P596X teacher/father Kevin Feeney and P176X Psychologist David Leslie-Skaller. Fathers, Brothers, Uncles and Grandfathers are all welcome at this great monthly event.

This week's photo features Sharaf from class X15 at our 178 site! Sharaf celebrated Thanksgiving with his friends in Class X15 by sharing in the Class Feast, making Thanksgiving crafts, and reading the book "One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims" by B.G. Hennessy about Pilgrim and Wampanoag children. Sharaf and his classmates enjoyed taking part in this fun Thanksgiving activity!

This week's photo features class X30 at our 498 site! Class X30 is super excited with our new addition to the class this month, Mr. Red Cookie our class Elf on the Shelf. Each morning, students enjoy finding Mr. Red Cookie and love seeing what he is up to. Students understand the concept of the elf flying back to the North Pole to report to Santa Claus if they have been naughty or nice. It’s a cute and fun interactive way to keep the spirit of Santa alive—and encourage good behavior in our class.

This week's photo features class X15 at our 178 site! Recently, class X15 read "The Gingerbread Man" and Jan Brett’s "Gingerbread Baby." The students made Gingerbread Man pancakes as a special breakfast treat. They also made their own gingerbread houses, like the one in Brett’s story. The students enjoyed this fun and educational activity

with their peers!

Week of January 10, 2022

 

This week's photos and videos feature class V50 at our 498 site! Students Miles, Anthony and Dane from class V50 are working hard and having fun with STEM! They each built a robot using the LEGO Education kit and programmed their movements using the WeDo2.0 app on the iPad. There are currently two different STEM programs at P596X. Our computer science program introduces our students to Coding, Digital Citizenship, and Lego Robotics.

Week of January 17, 2022

 

This week's photos feature class Y04 at our 178 site! The students of class Y04 recently conducted a science/chemistry experiment. The class filled an empty bottle with vinegar and put baking soda into the deflated balloon. Finally, they put the balloon over the bottle opening. The students made predictions and then watched the reaction inflate the balloon. The students enjoyed taking part in this fun activity!

Week of January 24, 2022

 

This week's photos feature students at our 178 site! The students are making their own codes using Ozobot, some students are participating in an "unplugged" coding activity in which they are learning what an algorithm is and other students are coding using the Codeapillar app. Ozobot and Codeapillar are part of our STEM program at P596X. Our computer science program introduces our students to Coding, Digital Citizenship, and Lego Robotics. The students enjoy participating in this exciting program!

Week of January 31, 2021

 

This week's photos feature students from class X15 at our 178 site! The students are practice conversational turn-taking while playing cooperatively during choice time. The students are interacting while playing with play-doh and board games. Social emotional skills can help students set goals for themselves and build positive relationships with peers. Social interactions help our students develop self-awareness and emotional management skills.

Week of February 7, 2022

 

This week's photo features students from class X31 at our 498 site! The students are participating in music class by tapping the notes to Old MacDonald Had a Farm along with a video showing the color-coded note names. The challenge is to tap the correct notes in rhythm, with alternating hands. The instrument is a xylophone made out of BoomWhackers. Boomwhackers produce musical tones when struck together, on the floor, or against nearly any surface. The students enjoy participating in this fun activity!

Week of February 14, 2022

 

This week's photo features student Mason G. from class X17 at our 178 site! Mason was named a National Student Ambassador by the North Shore Animal League. Mason was awarded a school grant in the amount of $500 to be used to further the work connected to our school comfort dog program. Class X17 is home to our school comfort dog, Izzy. Mason and his classmates participate in the Muttigrees curriculum, which focuses on responsibility, animal awareness, feelings and emotions. Izzy, brings this interactive curriculum to life. We would like to thank P.S.596X teacher, Mr. Trae Schlesinger who was instrumental in supporting Mason during this journey.

Congratulations to Mason and his family on this wonderful accomplishment.

This week's photos feature our Winter Garden Wellness event at our 178 site! On Tuesday, February 15th, parents, staff and students were invited to take part in a wellness event where participants were invited to make their own succulent garden!
The objective of this event was to allow participants to be a part of creating & sharing their beauty and love from the inside out with others. Parents, students and staff enjoyed taking part in this event to celebrate Winter and Valentines Day!

Week of March 7, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our respect for all week from February 14th through February 18th 2022! The goal of the week was to promote the theme of respect by engaging students in meaningful lessons and activities focused on preventing bias-based harassment, intimidation and/or bullying. All students and staff were encouraged to participate by dressing in themed attire each day. The themes included Valentine's Day, Teamwork Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Superhero Thursday and pajama Friday!

This week's photos feature our St. Patrick's Day celebration on Thursday, March 17, 2022! The celebration included a St. Patrick's Day parade and classroom celebrations! The students and staff dressed up in green, made hats and drew leprechauns! St. Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world every year on March 17, marking the anniversary of St. Patrick's death in the fifth century. Saint Patrick was actually born in Britain in 386. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in all of the fun activities that took place. 

Week of March 21, 2022

 

This week's photos feature the Book Fair at our 153 site. The book fair took place from Monday March 21st through Friday March 25th. Throughout the week, the classes from all 3 sites were able to visit the book for in-person or attend the book fair virtually online. Parents were able to make donations to their child's classroom and students were able to use an ewallet instead of cash in order to purchase books. The staff, students and parents all enjoyed visiting the book fair and look forward to next year's book fair.

This week's photo features our brand new culturally diverse book collection! P.S. 596X recently received a large collection of these books from the Chancellor's office - enough for all of our classes! These books were distributed to schools as part of a new universal curriculum called Mosaic/classroom libraries. This curriculum is designed to reflect the diversity of children in NYC public schools. 

The New York City Department of Education/P.S. 596X are committed to supporting learning environments that reflect the diversity of New York City.

Week of April 4, 2022

 

This week's photo features student Angelica N. from our 153 inclusion program! Angelica recently participated in the 153 science fair and finished in second place with honorable mention!

 

The experiment that Angelica conducted compared different types of soap to determine which soap makes the most bubbles. After completing the experiment, Angelica made a poster board to display her results.

 

All of the 153 students including Angelica enjoyed participating in the science fair!

Week of April 25, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our April Saturday Academy at our 178 site! The Academy provides an additional learning opportunity to assist parents in supporting their children’s success in school and the community. 

The activities are empowering, educational, interactive and fun. The April activities included a celebration of spring. Parents had the opportunity to mingle with other parents share concerns, relax or just talk about anything. Students were supervised by staff as they did arts, crafts and musical activities. Everyone had a great time!

This week's photos feature our P596X families attending Aladdin on Broadway! On Saturday, May 1, 2022, several of our P596X students and parents had the opportunity to see this exciting show at the New Amsterdam Theatre on W42nd street in Manhattan. Tickets were chosen by a lottery and families that were chosen received 2 tickets. The show performance that our families attended was specifically designed for individuals with autism. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to offering this great opportunity again in the future!

This week's photos feature our P596X STEM Fair at our 178, 153 and 498 sites! On Friday, May 13, 2022, our students participated in various STEM activities in their classroom.

 

Each classroom invited parents to join either virtually or in-person as the students completed activities such as planting.  

 

Everyone had a great time and we look forward to our STEM fair next year!

Week of May 16, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our new Promethean Boards at our 178, 153 and 498 sites. On Wednesday, May 18th, Thursday, May 19th and Monday, May 20th, Promethean boards were installed in the classrooms at all three of our sites. This exciting technology upgrade has been two years in the making and will allow our classroom teachers to infuse more technology into the classroom. Promethean boards allow lessons to be hands-on and interactive as students can come up to the board and manipulate the objects on the screen. The teachers and students are excited to start using their new technology upgrade.

Week of May 23, 2022

 

This week's photos feature classes Y11 and Y12 from our 178 site. On Tuesday, May 24th as part of our partnership with the Bronx Children's Museum Classes Y11 and Y12 went to Orchard Beach to explore native plants and animals. Students saw fish, mussels, oak trees, birds, wild onions, etc. Orchard Beach is the only beach in the Bronx. The beach sits on the Long Island Sound and offers a one-of-a-kind view of City Island. The students and staff had a lot of fun exploring the beach and surrounding area and hope to return for another visit very soon!

Week of May 30, 2022

 

This week's photos feature class X12 from our 178 site. The students in X12 recently learned about the life cycle of a butterfly. The students and staff watched over time as their little caterpillars grew into big caterpillars, built a chrysalis and finally emerged as painted lady butterflies! They enjoyed pieces of fruit in the classroom until they were released on Friday, May 20th in front of our school! The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activity!

Week of June 6, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our 2022 Field Day on the Harry S. Truman High School track! On Monday, June 6th, the students, staff and parents of P596X gathered for our exciting music and field day activities. The activities included ring toss, javelin throw, torch relay, pin the tail on the donkey, car racing, limbo, hurdle relay, long jump, home run derby, frisbee toss, soccer, volleyball,  parachute games, bouncy ball racing, bubbles and more! The ceremony also included the 596X color guard and a performance by the P596X Cheerleaders!  The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activity!

Week of June 13, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our 2022 Spring Fling for our 2022 Graduates! On Saturday, June 11th,  the staff, parents and P596X graduates gathered for music, dancing, karaoke, pin the tassel on the cap, arts and crafts, limbo, sensory activities, cotton candy machine, games and more! The afternoon also included snacks and refreshments as well as the opportunity to take graduate photos. The students parents and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activity!

Week of June 20, 2022

 

This week's photos feature students at our 153 site taking part in their recent build a taco activity. As part of their unit on healthy eating, the students took part in a taco building activity that included planning their taco on a graphic organizer and writing about their taco. After their planning and writing were finished, the students were able to build and eat their taco. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activity!

This week's photos feature our ceremony to honor our school safety agents and crossing guards. On Thursday, June 23, 2022, P596X parent Ms. Latoya Massy and Principal Siracuse hosted a ceremony with Senator Jamaal Bailey  to honor and celebrate our school safety agents and crossing guards. Ms. Massy got donations from a variety of local businesses - including rice and beans, chicken, salads, fruits, deli wraps and sandwiches, deserts and a personalized cake. The school presented each agent with a plaque and the principal's office was decorated and displayed a variety of cards from the students. Thank you to Ms. Massy for her creative and kind idea to honor our colleagues!

This week's photos feature our June parent breakfast. On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, P596X hosted a breakfast to thank our parents for their partnership during the 2021 - 2022 school year. The breakfast, which was hosted by Principal Siracuse included a catered breakfast, art activity, parent awards and student performance. The parents enjoyed the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work throughout the school year. A special thanks to former assistant principal and mentor Elena Talamo-Mirabal for her decorations and for organizing the art activity for this event!

This week's photo features three of our 498 graduates. The students pictured from class V50 at our 498 site are Miles, Dante and Reylin. 

The boys will be graduating this year and moving to the middle school. We will miss them and wish them good luck in their new school. A special thank you to 498 Occupational Therapist Lily Chan for providing this photo.

Week of July 18, 2022

 

This week's photo features class C02 Pre-K at our 178 site. The students recently completed a fly swatted painting as part of their sensory art class. Sensory art consists of specific art activities that relate to a child's senses such as touch, sight, sound, smell and taste. By providing a variety of sensory play activities children naturally learn how to explore, investigate and create. These are the beginning steps to encourage creative thinking. A special thank you to art teacher Cheryl Abramson for providing this photo of the week!

Week of July 25, 2022

 

This week's photo features the speech therapy team at our 153 site! The 153 speech team includes Ms. Kristen, Ms. Vivian, Ms. Kathleen, Ms. Samantha, Ms. Pat, and Ms. Stephanie. Speech therapists target improving students’ social skills through individual and small group therapy sessions and then provide opportunities to practice their social skills with others in the school and community. Students work to improve their understanding of other people’s perspectives, initiating and turn-taking conversations, interpreting facial expressions and gestures.

Week of August 1, 2022

 

This week's photos feature class X21 from our 153 site and class X17 from our 178 site. As part of our summer space theme, the students used a total of eight Oreo cookies to visualize the phases of the moon. The students used the contrast of the frosting and cookie to represent light and shadows on the surface of the moon as seen from Earth. The moon fully orbits around Earth about once every month. During its orbit, we can see the moon in different phases. The phases are controlled by the amount of sunlight reflected off the moon that we can see from Earth at any point during its orbit. The students enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activities. 

Week of August 8, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our "Walk Through Outer Space" at our 498 site. During our summer program, the related service providers at the 498X site recreated a sensory based solar system for our students to walk through so they could experience what it is like to be in space. The walk through included a connection to literacy and students had to opportunity to read a story describing different characteristics of the planets. The students enjoyed taking part in this unique and engaging sensory experience that was aligned to our summer space theme. A special thanks to the related service providers at the 498 site for putting this experience together for our students!

This week's photos feature our Summer Carnival. On Wednesday, August 3, 2022, P596X hosted our summer carnival in the 181X school yard. The carnival included bouncy houses, fun slides, music, games, snow cones, an obstacle course and a baseball batting game. The students, parents and staff had a blast and enjoyed taking part in this exciting summer activity!

This week's photos feature our Water Mania event at our 178 site. On Wednesday, August 10, 2022 PS596X held our summer Water Mania event in the 178X school yard. The event included bouncy houses, wet and dry obstacle courses, small water slides, a slip n' slide, music, snow cones and more! Parents and staff were also invited to take part in this exciting event. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to hosting this event again during our next chapter 683 summer program! 

Week of August 29, 2022

 

This week's photos feature our Sensory Space Lab! On Friday, August 12, 2022 at our 178 site as part of our culminating activity for our summer space theme, each class created a space themed sensory activity to display and for the students to experience. Similar events took place at our 153 and 498 sites. The classes displayed some amazing sensory creations and worked very hard to put this activity together as a way to end our summer. The students and staff enjoyed taking part in this activity as a way to conclude the chapter 683 summer program.
