Week of September 3, 2018

This week's photo features our brand new sign in front of our main site at P.S. 178. This bright and colorful sign was created as part of our transition to our new school name, P.S. 596X. The features include our new school logo which was designed by one of our students, and the school motto: "Celebrating Success One Student and One Family at a Time!" The sign is also in front of our P.S. 153 and P.S. 498 sites and is featured on our school website and app.

Week of October 8, 2018

This week's photo features our September parent engagement activity at P.S. 178. On Friday, September 28th, PS596X hosted the first parent engagement activity of the new school year at our three sites. Parents had the opportunity to visit their child's classroom, meet their child's teacher and paraprofessionals, and participate in classroom activities. Our next parent engagement activity will take place on Friday, October 26th and will celebrate Hispanic Heritage month.

Week of October 15, 2018

This week's photo features class Y01 at P.S. 178. As part of their October STEM unit, class Y01 began a study of pumpkins.  They compared big and little pumpkins, described how the pumpkins looked and felt, opened a pumpkin to examine its seeds and pulp, and planted pumpkin seeds. In this picture, the students are building social skills by working together to try and remove the stem to find out what’s inside the pumpkin.

Week of October 22, 2018

This week's photo features the PS596X staff at the breast cancer walk. Our staff joined hundreds of people on Sunday October 20th at Orchard Beach as they united to walk it out for Breast Cancer. The energy was amazing and our school showed their team spirit with signs and shirts representing P596X in the best way. The staff members that walked on behalf of our staff include Yvonne, Vita & (her 3 beautiful girls) and Natalie.

Week of October 29, 2018

This week's photo features class V50 at our PS 498 site. Class V50 joined forces with P.S./M.S. 498 to raise money in the fight against breast cancer.

 

Each student in the class purchased a piece of tape to tape the P.S./M.S. 498 principal to the wall! The students loved being a part of this activity with their campus community!

Week of November 5, 2018

This week's photo features class V23 at our PS 153 site. Class V23 recently had a luncheon with our principal, Mr. John Siracuse.

 

The students were invited to the luncheon to celebrate and share their persuasive writing assignments they have been working on recently in their writing class. The students enjoyed sharing their hard work with our principal.

Week of November 12, 2018

This week's photo features class Y59 at our PS 178 site. Recently the students in class Y-59 worked on reading descriptions about Fall! After reading students were able to decorate their own leaves using fall colors. The students enjoyed participating in this fun activity with their classmates!

Week of November 19, 2018

This week's photo features the Mutt-i-grees Ambassador Program at our 178 site. The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum is a Pre-K - Grade 12 curriculum that develops calm, confident, caring kids and creates a more humane future for all through social emotional learning. Jayden H, a student at our 178 site is a student ambassador for the program. Jaden is one of only 20 students in the country selected to participate in the program.

Week of November 26, 2018

This week's photo features class V05 at our 178 site. The students recently completed a creative writing activity where they were asked to describe and write about what they would do if they were a turkey on Thanksgiving. The students came up with many creative stories and enjoyed taking part in this activity during the week of Thanksgiving!

This week's photo features class L06/L07 at our 153 site. Inclusion students at our P.S. 153 site are currently working on revising and editing their informative writing pieces. The classes will be publishing their pieces soon and will participate in a publishing party! 

Week of December 10, 2018

This week's photos feature class X31 at our 498 site. Class X31 had a visit from the Bronx Museum Bus on Friday, December 7th.  Although the bus had an emergency and the students were not able to go onto the bus, the museum staff was able to bring several of the exhibits into the classroom and the students were able to experience some cool stuff! They were able to see a pretend and preserved Eastern Red Bat and touch a Coyote fur and skull! The kids loved it and cannot wait to go onto the bus, which shows scenes from Orchard Beach and the Bronx River!

Week of December 17, 2018

This week's photo features art teacher Cheryl Abramson and our students at our 178 site. Teacher Cheryl Abramson and students from PS 596X @ 178X were recently recognized by several city council members and Marquis Studios for their multimedia artwork, "Our Heroes: No Job Too Small." Cheryl and the students worked very hard on this and we are very proud of them!

This week's photo features parents from PS596X and PS176X along with our parent coordinator, Dawn Harney at  our PS178 site. The photos show the parents taking part in flower therapy during the 176x/596x parent support group. The parents enjoyed taking part in this very relaxing and therapeutic activity!

Week of January 7, 2019

This week's photos feature parents and students from PS596X at a recent performance of Wicked on Broadway! The Center for Educational Innovation generously donated 15 tickets to see the hit Broadway show, Wicked! On the evening of Wednesday, January 9th, PS596X students and their families gathered at the Gershwin theater in NYC to celebrate the arts. Alicia Wilson was the chaperone for this trip and did a wonderful job organizing our students, contacting their parents, distributing the tickets and took some beautiful photos! The parents and students had a wonderful time!

Week of January 14, 2019

This week's photos feature our recent Sing For Hope piano ceremony at PS178! Recently, PS596X was the proud recipient of a Sing For Hope Piano which was designed and painted by local artist Dhanashree Gadiyar. Sing for Hope places artist-designed pianos throughout NYC’s parks and public spaces for anyone and everyone to play. Each summer, the pianos bring individuals and communities together in an open festival of art for all. After their time on the streets, Sing for Hope transports the instruments to NYC public schools, where they enrich students’ lives for years to come. On the morning of Monday, January 14th, 2019, the piano was given a permanent home at PS596X with a ribbon cutting ceremony and musical performance. The students and staff were very excited to see this beautiful work of art and to be a part of the ceremony to welcome the piano to its permanent home! A special thanks to our friends at Sing For Hope and teachers Danielle Silves and Janet Weingarden!

Week of January 21, 2019

This week's photo features class V21 at PS153! Class V21 recently went to Lehman College to visit the art gallery.  The class had a private tour of the gallery, where the instructor taught the students about sculptures and reflective paintings.  The student's were given the opportunity to sketch pictures about what they saw throughout the gallery, as well as make a collage at the end of their tour.  It was an unforgettable learning experience for the students in the class, understanding the world around them through the arts.

Week of January 28, 2019

This week's photo features class V20 at PS153! Class V20 participated in the Health and Wellness Fair which took place on Friday, January 11th at the PS178 and PS153 units and on Friday, January 18th at our PS498 unit. The students learned about the five senses and focused on how the sense of taste could help them make healthy food choices! The students had the opportunity to be “taste testers” and tried various foods and discussed whether or not it would be a healthy food choice. The students enjoyed taking part in this activity!

Week of February 4, 2019

This week's photo features classes X18 and X19 at PS178! On Friday, February 1st classes X18 and X19 learned about the Super Bowl. Each class played a paper football game to learn about the different aspects of a football game and how the game is played. Class X18 had a chicken wing taste test with different sauces.  The wings were prepared by paraprofessional Andre Garo. The students all agreed that barbecue sauce was their favorite flavor. Class X19 made ice cream sundaes in football-shaped bowls. The students all enjoyed themselves and were excited to see the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 3rd. They had a great time learning a new game and interacting with their peers!

Week of February 11, 2019

This week's photos feature the students and staff of PS596X at PS178, PS153, and PS498. In honor of Respect For All Week, which took place the week of February 11th, PS596X, in collaboration with general education, decided to “Dress the Message” together. The goal of the week was to promote the theme of respect by engaging students in meaningful lessons and activities focused on preventing bias-based harassment, intimidation and/or bullying. All students and staff were encouraged to participate by dressing in themed attire each day. The week kicked off with "Backwards shirt day" to show that we have each other's backs by being UPSTANDERS. The week continued with “Super Me, Super You Day.” The students and staff wore their favorite superhero shirt to show off their inner hero, illustrating to everyone the power of good. Wednesday, 2/13/19 was “Teamwork Day" when participants sported their favorite Team Jersey and Thursday, 2/14/19 was red or pink day to show love for families, friends and the school community. We finished the week on Friday, 2/15/17 with “Pajama Day.” We sported our pajamas to show that 596X and general education are  working together to put hate to bed!

Week of February 25, 2019

This week's photos feature the Pre-K students of class Y77 at PS178. The students in Y77 have been very busy recently, completing many fun and educational activities! Some of the activities pictured include an EASE activity where students are asked to find a heart of a particular color, a Valentines Day painting activity where students painted and made heart prints in the color of their choice, and a mathematics activity where the students are asked to count eight vehicles and put each vehicle in its own box. The students are very excited to come to school everyday and very eager to show off their work to others!

This week's photo features our March Parent Workshop at PS178. This month's parent engagement featured a yoga and meditation class in the PS178 gym. The class was led by yoga and APE teacher JoAnne Solomone. Parents commented on how they felt before and after the yoga session and how effective the class was. Participants were very relaxed and had a very difficult time leaving at the conclusion of the class. As a bonus, parents received a beautiful meditation gift bag for attending. They were very thankful and pleased with the "delicious" treats. A special thanks to mentor Elena Talamo-Mirabal for assembling the baskets for this workshop.

Another thank you to parent coordinator Dawn Harney and teacher JoAnne Solomone who worked hard to make this event a success! The parents really enjoyed themselves and the feedback was amazing. We hope to help parents connect to mind, spirit and body again in the near future!

Week of March 11, 2019

This week's photo features class X18 and the Mutt-i-Grees Program at PS178. On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, Mr. Brian Balthazar and a team from the North Shore Animal League visited PS596X. Brian and NSAL were so impressed by the work taking place, specifically that around the Mutt-i-grees curriculum and PS596X Ambassador, Jayden Holloman.  Our visitors had the opportuity to meet several students who are taking part in the Mutt-i-grees program and heard first hand how this incredible program has impacted them. The day was absolutely wonderful from start to finish, so much so that Brian posted several pictures and even a video highlighting his day with us, via his Instagram page. A very special thank you goes to teacher, Trae Schlesinger who organized this visit, as well as Assistant Principal, Evauna Neville who perfectly planned the flow of the visit! Week of March 18, 2019

This week's photo features Class Y60 at PS153. In honor of Women’s History Month the students read a story about Mae Jemison. They learned that she was a doctor, a professional dancer and the first black astronaut. The students read an interactive book and then watched a video about her. Finally, the students made a collage to show what they learned. The students enjoyed taking part in this fun and engaging activity and had the opportunity to present their work at the District 75 Social Studies Fair! They were able to show off their hard work to the many visitors including District 75 Superintendent Ketler Louissaint!

Week of March 25, 2019

This week's photo features Class X24 at PS153. Recently the students went to Daniel's Music Foundation and were "feeling the beat!" The Daniel’s Music program believes that everyone is a musician, regardless of their experience and provides a comfortable, educational and social environment in which individuals of all abilities can enjoy, learn, and practice the joy of music together. During their visit, the students of class X24 worked on their social/emotional skills through singing, dancing, movement, and the exploration of musical instruments. The students had a blast and can't wait to go back!

Week of April 1, 2019

This week's photo features Class V21 at PS153. World Autism Day was on Tuesday, April 2nd and April is National Autism Awareness Month. In order to help us celebrate acceptance, awareness, inclusion and appreciation of our P596X students who are classified with autism, the students and staff were asked to wear blue to show their support. In the photo above, the students are showing off their blue outfits and enjoyed all wearing the same color!

Week of April 15, 2019

This week's photos feature class Y09 at PS178.

Recently, the students planted tomato, basil, and cucumber seeds and are growing plants in their classroom. In the photo above, Joseph is helping to water the plants. The students also put celery in water with food coloring and studied how the leaves changed color. The students observed how the plants absorbed and used the water to help them grow and change. The students are enjoying learning about plants and are looking forward to all of the spring plants and flowers they will see outside in the near future!

This week's photos feature class X14 at PS178.

Recently, the students went on a class trip to National Geographic Encounter in Times Square and experienced a walk-through adventure across the Pacific Ocean. The students were able to see, hear and feel what it’s like to live under the sea. The students also heard stories from National Geographic photographers and explorers and were able to play many interactive games. The students had fun learning about ocean life and habitat. It was interactive and the students truly enjoyed their experience!

Week of May 6, 2019

This week's photos feature class V22 at PS153.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, PS596X held their annual field day on the Truman High School track. The weather could not have been more beautiful and there were a wide variety of activities for the students to participate in. Some of the activities included ring toss, car racing, face painting, a DJ/dancing, a torch race, long jump, frisbee toss, bouncy ball race, bean bag toss, fitness dice activity and volleyball just to name a few! The 178 unit was dressed in red, the 153 unit was dressed in blue and the 498 unit was dressed in white to show off their school spirit. The students were able to participate in every activity and received a medal for their participation at the end of the event. Everyone had a great time!  

Week of May 20, 2019

This week's photos feature students from our STEM classes at PS178.

Recently, District 75 hosted STEM Week. Schools from across the city came together for various events, all of which centered around STEM education. Both PS178 STEM teachers Karen and Melissa participated and represented 596x very well. We are pleased to announce that 596x won both the Penny Boat and Egg Drop challenges! PS178 student, Nathan's boat held 320 pennies! All 3 of our egg carton designs held up beautifully! Congratulations on a job well done to Karen and Melissa and the 178 students that participated in this exciting series of events!

Week of May 27, 2019

This week's photo features Benny the Reading Dog and Paris from class Y65 at PS153. Last week, Benny and his caretaker Kathryn visited classes at P596X@PS153. The R.E.A.D. program helps improve children’s reading, communication and social skills by utilizing registered therapy animals and their teammate in a calm and relaxing atmosphere. The students all had an opportunity to read with and take pictures with Benny. Our students are make enormous strides building self-esteem and confidence, elevating reading scores, and acquiring a love of books by reading to Benny the therapy dog. This picture of Paris and Benny is proof how wonderful this program has been and how far all the kids have come in their reading!

Week of June 3, 2019

This week's photo features students from class X17 at our 178 site. Students Madison and Jahsiah are hard at work completing their First Author writing assignment about summer. Working in pairs, the students share out their thoughts and then write on what their favorite thing to do in summer is! First Author is a Common Core aligned writing curriculum created for students who demonstrate delays in early and pre-requisite writing skills. Students can make gains in writing from scribbling an unidentifiable picture to writing multiple sentences. The program is designed to enhance the writing ability of each student. Students are assessed by the 14-point Developmental Writing Scale, included in the curriculum. The students are enjoying using this program to improve their writing and communication skills!

Week of June 10, 2019

This week's photos feature our recent school performance of Disney's 101 Dalmatians Kids! Many of our students from all three of our sites participated in the performance as part of the Disney Musicals in Schools Program.  

They say “All the world is a stage…”  At P596X we are thrilled to be part of this special program. We are one of five schools selected to be a part of this program.  So many skills are learned as students are working together in rehearsals; reading, following direction, music, social skills, language arts, self-expression and most of all: self-confidence!!! Our students and staff did an amazing job this year from the make-up, to the costumes, the sets, and the music!

Many thanks to the Disney organization for this fantastic program and kudos to all students and staff that were involved!
